LBJ will host the seventh annual Bob Hayes Jaguar Classic this weekend in a tournament that honors the former LBJ coach. The eight-team tournament includes LBJ, Hutto, Manor New Tech, Eastside Memorial, Brenham, Manor, Copperas Cove and St. Stephen’s. If seeds hold, Manor and LBJ could meet in Saturday’s title game at 4 p.m. Both teams entered this week ranked in the state polls, and the two teams play again Tuesday at LBJ in a nondistrict contest. LBJ is coming off an 80-55 nondistrict win over Pflugerville on Tuesday. Isiah Rector scored 18 points and Jordan Teal had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. Manor went 5-0 while winning the Lorena tournament over the weekend. Hutto could play spoiler; the Hippos (10-1) have won four consecutive games behind Jean-Pierre Sanders, who’s averaging 20.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.5 steals and 5.3 assists per game. … Taylor will also host a tournament this weekend with Elgin, Churchlands State, Cedar Park, Giddings, Travis, Georgetown, Liberty Hill, Navarro, Navasota and St. Dominic Savio. The title game is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Westlake (14-1) defended its tournament title at the Anderson Classic and won its second tournament of the season by beating San Antonio Holmes (69-36), Kingwood (54-36), Cypress Falls (65-36) and Rockwall (68-41). KJ Adams scored 25 against Cypress Falls while playing barely more than a half… . Del Valle’s Darion Jones scored more than 18 points three times as the Cardinals went 2-2 at the Bowie tournament with wins over LBJ and Cedar Park and losses to Akins and LBJ. Jones had 20 points and seven rebounds against Cedar Park, 22 points and seven rebounds in the first matchup against LBJ and 18 points and nine rebounds in the second game against LBJ. He then scored 25 points for Del Valle in a 74-52 win over Akins on Tuesday that opened District 25-6A for both teams. … Senior guard Tyler Heltzel scored 26 points as Stony Point won the consolation bracket at the South San Antonio tournament with a 67-60 win over San Antonio power East Central. … Westwood senior guard Marcos Martinez banked in a shot at the buzzer to give Westwood a 43-41 road win at Hendrickson in the District 13-6A opener for both teams Tuesday. … Glenn junior Jaylen Thompson continued his early-season scoring binge by setting a school record with 40 points in the win over East View at the Marble Falls tournament. Thompson led Glenn to wins over Liberty Hill (65-64), East View (74-57), San Antonio Edison (46-35) and Copperas Cove (59-46) in the tournament, and the Grizz beat Liberty Hill in a nondistrict matchup Tuesday, 56-52. … Matthew Minor scored 20 points for Cedar Park in a 62-55 nondistrict win over San Marcos Tuesday. …. Fueled by a frenetic, pressing defense that averages more than 21 steals a game, Manor New Tech is off to a strong start with an overall record of 6-3. They opened District 25-3A play with a 56-26 road win at Florence. PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Greg Brown III, senior, Vandegrift: Brown, a 6-foot-7 forward who is one of the top recruits in the country, earned tournament MVP honors as he helped the Vipers win the gold division of the Jack Frost Tournament in Georgetown. Brown averaged more than 29 points in the three pool play wins, including 38 against Richardson Berkner. The Vipers beat Byron Nelson 69-58 in the championship game.
